KABUL, Afghanistan -- The Taliban's hanging of a 7-year-old boy, accused of being a spy, is a "crime against humanity," Afghan President Hamid Karzai said yesterday.

The boy was reportedly hanged Wednesday before a crowd in lawless Helmand province after the Taliban hauled him before a makeshift court and convicted him of espionage on behalf Karzai's government.

"A 7-year-old boy cannot be a spy," Karzai said in Kabul during a press conference with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron. "A 7-year-old boy cannot be anything but a 7-year-old boy."

Cameron said: "If this is true, it is an absolutely horrific crime. If true, I think it says more about the Taliban than any book, than any article, than any speech could ever say."

The boy was not identified but described as the son and grandson of tribal leaders in Helmand's Sangin district.

The execution occurred shortly before a Taliban suicide bombing killed at least 40 at a Kandahar wedding.
