Warsaw A Hungarian accused of involvement in a notorious 1942 massacre has been acquitted, in a verdict that shocked those who considered the case one of the world's last trials for Nazi-era war crimes. The court cleared Sandor Kepiro, 97, pictured, of all charges related to the slaughter of around 1,200 Jews, gypsies and Serbs in Novi Sad. Mr. Kepiro, a gendarme captain at the time of the massacre, had been charged with responsibility for the deaths of 36 Jews and Serbs. The defence had argued that there was no direct evidence linking Mr. Kepiro to the massacre. Mr. Kepiro at one point topped the list of most wanted Nazis.
