People suspected of being Islamist rebels have killed five people at a wedding party in eastern Algeria, the official news agency APS reported Friday. The attack took place in the Ghrab hamlet in Tebessa Province, near the border with Tunisia, late on Thursday, APS said, quoting an unnamed security official. A conflict between security forces and Islamist rebels reached a peak in the 1990s after authorities canceled elections that an Islamist party was poised to win. Violence has subsided, but there have been attacks on civilians, government forces and foreigners for which the North African wing of Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility.
