SRINAGAR, Kashmir (Reuters) — India reimposed a curfew in Kashmir on Saturday and deployed thousands of police officers, officials said, a day after four people died in demonstrations by Kashmiris demanding independence from India.

A total off 55 people have been killed in the protests, the angriest since a separatist revolt against India broke out in Kashmir in 1989, despite calls for calm by public figures, including separatist leaders. Most of the protesters have been killed by the police, who have fired into crowds of demonstrators.

The authorities had lifted the curfew on Thursday, the start of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. But Friday’s violence dashed any government hopes of calm during Ramadan. In 2008, large anti-India protests died down just before Ramadan.
