Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch arrived at the Temple Mount on Friday afternoon and accused Hamas and the Islamic Movement's northern branch of igniting riots in Jerusalem's Old City and its surroundings earlier in the day.

 

Some 60 Palestinians and 20 policemen were injured in violent clashes between the security forces and the worshippers.

The riots spread to other areas in the capital as well. Some 20 youths from east Jerusalem threw stones at the security forces in the Old City's Muslim Quarter. Twenty other youths hurled stones at police and Border Guard officers in the Arab neighborhood of Ras al-Amud. Stones were also thrown at the entrance to the village of Issawiya. Three suspects were arrested.

 

Clashes in West Bank as well

Additional clashes took place during other protests in the West Bank. Some 50 people hurled stones at the security forces near the village of Dir Nizam, northwest of Ramallah.

 

Nearby, in Nabi Saleh, Palestinians reported that a youth was badly injured in the head by a rubber bullet. The boy was hurt over the eye and rushed unconscious to the hospital in the Palestinian town of Salfit. 

 

Protestors reported that the boy was hurt from shots fired by soldiers stationed on a roof at the edge of the village. According to the Palestinians, five additional protestors were injured in the area, one of them a woman hit by a gas grenade projector and four others who were hurt by rubber bullets.

 

Some 250 Palestinians and left-wing Israeli and foreign activists clashed with the security forces in three places in the Ramallah area. About 70 protests clashed with the forces near the village of Naalin and about 130 protested near the village of Bilin and hurled stones at the security forces. There were no reports of injuries.
