A serialized Web comic about Iran, exploring social, political and human rights problems there, makes its debut on Friday. The publisher, First Second Books, describes the strip, called “Zahra’s Paradise,” as “real-time historical fiction,” blending current events with fictional composites of actual Iranians. The first story line, above, begins in June 2009 during the turmoil surrounding the contested presidential election. Mark Siegel, the editorial director of First Second, said in a statement that “Zahra’s Paradise” “is not merely a work of observation,” adding, “Art becomes a player, a participant, a voice adding to the chorus of voices in the streets and on the rooftops of Iran.” The Web comic is written by Amir, a human-rights activist, and illustrated by Khalil. First Second Books is keeping their last names confidential to protect their safety. The comic can be read at zahrasparadise.com beginning Friday.
