Italy’s top security official said Thursday that authorities had broken up an international terrorist cell with the arrest in Italy and elsewhere in Europe of 17 Algerians suspected of raising money to finance terrorism. The official, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, called the cell “significant.” The arrests stemmed from an antiterrorism investigation in Milan, and antiterrorist units from Algeria, Austria, Britain, France, Spain and Switzerland cooperated in the inquiry.
