Hamas said it was investigating the death of a prisoner after a Palestinian human rights group said he was tortured during interrogation. The group, the Independent Commission for Human Rights, said the inmate, Jamil Assaf, was the second prisoner to die in a Hamas jail in Gaza this month. The group said one of its researchers had seen marks on Mr. Assaf’s hands and legs indicating that he had been tortured in jail. Mr. Assaf was detained by the police on March 9 and died in Gaza’s main hospital on Tuesday. Islam Shahwan, a police spokesman in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, said the police were investigating Mr. Assaf’s death.
