The extreme right-wing Our Land of Israel party has offered the top spot on its Knesset list to convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, who is currently serving a life sentence in a United States Federal Prison for espionage.

The legality of the offer is unclear and Pollard's family have refused to endorse it, saying his name should not be used to support any particular political party, as his actions were meant to help all of Israel.

Pollard served as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy in the 1980s, where he used his position to funnel classified information to Israel in exchange for cash and jewelry. He was found guilty of espionage in 1987 and sentenced to life in prison.

The Our Land of Israel party, which is headed by far-right activists Baruch Marzel and Rabbi Dov Volpo, has called on all parties in the Knesset to follow their lead and add Pollard to their lists.

Israel granted Pollard citizenship in 1995 and has provided him with legal representation in an effort to lobby for his release, something that successive U.S. administrations have so far refused to do.
