The Royal Canadian Mounted Police raided the national headquarters of the governing Conservative Party in Ottawa. John Enright, a spokesman for Elections Canada, a government agency, said the police were executing a search warrant on its behalf. He declined to comment further. The elections agency has been looking into allegations that the Conservatives circumvented campaign spending restrictions during the 2006 vote that brought the party to power. In the House of Commons, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “In this case, our legal position is rock solid.”
