Yakov M. Rabkin, professor at the Université de Montréal, will launch his latest book entitled A Threat from Within: A Century of Jewish Opposition to Zionism in London, on 16 December. The event will be held at the Khalili Lecture Theatre of the London Middle East Institute and will be followed by a reception.

The English translation of Au nom de la Torah, Une histoire de l’opposition juive au sionisme, discusses the sensitive issue of Jewish opposition to Zionism. Not only does it address a major cornerstone of Zionist propaganda, it also outlines historic facts, particularly that of a Middle East where Muslims and Jews have harmoniously coexisted in the past. The author reminds the reader that traditional Jewish culture discourages all forms of political and military activism, particularly in the land of Israel, whereas Zionism is built on a desire for aggression and conquest. Since its 2004 release in French, Au nom de la Torah has been translated into Italian, Spanish, Arabic, and German, and the English version is in the running for the 2006 Canada Governor General’s Award.

Yakov M. Rabkin is an historian whose fields of interest include contemporary Jewish history and the history of science. Apart from his university coursework, he has studied Judaism under a number of rabbis in Canada, France, and Israel. He is often invited to speak to the media regarding the situation of Jews around the world and in Israel.
